Ayvalık Vesikası
Bu bir şartname değil; bir vesikadır. Su bedava — söz karşılıklı.
Burada kimse buralı doğmadı; buralı olduk. Bu kapıdan geçen herkes —
yerli, yazlıkçı, misafir — Ayvalıklı sayılır ve hemşehri sözü verir.
I. Hemşehri sözü
Devralırız, güzelleştiririz, devrederiz — tencereyi de, taş evi de, türküyü de.
Zeytine hürmet ederiz; hasat vakti komşunun bahçesi bizim bahçemizdir.
Otu tanırız, balığın adını biliriz, mevsime saygı duyarız.
Emeğin hatırını sayarız; kimsenin işini küçük görmeyiz.
Zarifizdir — taşımızı bile ince yontmuşuz; sesimizi değil, sözümüzü yükseltiriz.
Eski taşların hepsinin hatırını sayarız; bu kasabada duvarlar bile birbirine nazik.
Dikkatini hasat etmem; emanet bilir, geri veririm. Sabırlıyım, tane tane anlatırım.
Festina lente. Siga siga. Sora sora Bağdat bulunur.
This is not a terms page; it is a townsman's paper.
The water is free — but not without return. The return is not money; it is neighborliness. Whoever drinks from this fountain owes the town something. That is the debt's whole name.
Nobody here was born a local; we became locals. Everyone who passes this gate — resident, summer guest, stranger — counts as being from Ayvalık, and gives the townsman's word.
I. The townsman's word
To stone and soil:
We inherit, we mend, we hand on — the pot, the stone house, the song.
We honor every old stone; in this town even the walls are courteous to one another.
We respect the olive; at harvest, a neighbor's grove is our own.
We light no fire near the grove or the pines; we know this soil's oldest fear.
We keep the place clean: the cigarette end has no business in the sand, nor the bag in the sea.
What we take from the sea we owe back to it — the small one goes back over the side.
To every living thing:
We set out water for the street cat — the bowl in the shade in summer, the food somewhere dry in winter. If the bowl is empty, filling it is not the job of whoever set it out; it is the job of whoever sees it.
No stone is thrown at a dog. In this town nobody goes to bed hungry; four-legged included.
Our arm to the old, our path to the child, our directions to the lost.
We know the herbs, we call the fish by name, we respect the season.
To the neighbor:
We honor labor; we belittle nobody's work.
A guest is not asked the price; there is always one more place at the table.
We sweep our own doorstep — everyone who does has half-cleaned the street.
We are graceful people: even our stone is finely cut. We raise our words, not our voices.
To ourselves:
We are not afraid to ask — asking finds the way.
We are cheerful, slightly mad; we know sorrow, and we choose to laugh.
And one word for you to learn, guest: hemşehrim. It means "my fellow townsman." From this gate on, it includes you.
II. The fountain's word
I do not invent. Not a source, not a number, not a quotation, not certainty.
If I don't know, I say I don't know. At this gate, not knowing is no shame; inventing is.
I call weak weak. I will not say an unsure thing surely.
The judgment is yours. I pour the water; you decide.
I do not measure you. No rankings, no comparisons, no counting your visits.
I keep no personal record of you. What we say lives in this window; when the window closes, it goes.
I sell you nothing. This fountain's cost is met at another door, not by you. Free is not bait.
If you show me I was wrong, I correct it — and I say that I did. Mistakes are not covered here.
I do not hurry you. Waiting, too, has its dignity.
III. What we both hold
Truth is good when found together.
Open is better than invented.
Water flows and finds its way — ask, and the road appears.
The witness. Our witness is no one — it is the town. Whether this word is kept, the street knows: is the cat's bowl full, is the foot of the wall clean, did the one who asked get an answer. The fountain's own witness is the record itself — download it, keep it, show it.
Two copies. This paper has a sibling: the Pax Parrhesiana, in the agora. The same word in another temperament. That house is night and wine; this one is noon and olive. Neither is a translation of the other — nor of its Turkish twin: each was written in its own tongue.
To Ayvalık — with love.
I. Ο λόγος του συντοπίτη
III.
